University
of Cincinnati standouts Tony Campana
(Springboro, OH/Springboro), Josh Harrison
(Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and Dan
Osterbrock (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) were
named to the 2008 Preseason all-BIG EAST
team, as announced by the league on
Thursday (Jan. 3). The Bearcats were
picked to finish ninth in the conference
by a vote of the league's coaches.
"We're excited about the preseason
recognition for Tony, Josh and Dan," head
coach Brian Cleary said. "Typically, by
the end of June, the preseason polls don't
mean all that much. Being selected to
finish ninth gives us room for improvement
throughout the season."
Campana continues to earn preseason
recognition after his record-setting 2007
campaign. Recognized on the Wallace Watch
List and the NCBWA Preseason All-America
Team, the speedy centerfielder was a
second-team all-BIG EAST and second-team
ABCA All-Region honoree in 2007. Second in
school history in stolen bases after just
one season with the Bearcats, he swiped 60
bags in 2007. Campana finished second
nationally and set the school's
single-season stolen bases record when he
nabbed his 36th bag of the year in the
team's 27th game of the season. He
finished second on the team in both
batting average (.329) and walks (33).
An ABCA All-Region and all-BIG EAST
second-team selection, Harrison ranked
among the BIG EAST leaders in runs (T-6th,
59), doubles (T-9th, 17), home runs
(T-12th, 9), RBIs (10th, 56), total bases
(T-11th, 120), slugging percentage (9th,
.545), sacrifice flies (1st, 9) and stolen
bases (T-7th, 21) in 2007. He paced the
Bearcats in runs, hits, doubles and
multi-hit games (24) and was third in
batting average (.327). In just two
seasons, Harrison has established himself
as one of the best players in Bearcats
history, as he has recorded a hit in 94 of
114 career games, holds a .347 career
batting average and ranks in the top-20 in
school history in runs scored and stolen
bases.

Tony
Campana (Springboro, OH./Warren County), a
senior outfielder at the University of
Cincinnati, has been named a third-team
preseason all-American by the National
Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Earlier this month, Campana was named to
the "watch list" for the Brooks Wallace
award, given annually to the nation's top
collegiate player.
Campana put forth an outstanding first
season with the Bearcats in 2007 after
transferring from UNC-Asheville. He earned
spots on the ABCA all-Region second-team
and all-BIG EAST second-team. Campana
ranked second in the BIG EAST with 60
stolen bases and easily broke the Bearcats
single season steals record during the
27th game with his 36th steal of the year.
Campana held a .329 batting average, which
ranked second on the team, with five
doubles, a triple and 18 RBI.
Campana is one of just three BIG EAST
players to be named to the NCBWA preseason
teams. World Series champion Kevin
Youkilis of the Boston Red Sox is the last
Bearcat to earn postseason all-America
honors being named to the second team in
2000 and 2001. In 2006, Josh Harrison
(Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and Steve
Blevins (Louisa, KY/Lawrence County)
earned Freshman All-America honors.
Dec.
10, 2007
Tony
Campana, a senior outfielder at the
University of Cincinnati, has been named
to the 2008 Wallace Watch, the College
Baseball Foundation announced. The "Watch"
is comprised of 227 of the nation's best
players, all vying for the Brooks Wallace
Award, which honors college baseball's top
player at the conclusion of the 2007
season.
Campana (Springboro, OH./Warren County)
put forth an outstanding first season with
the Bearcats in 2007 after transferring
from UNC-Aheville. He earned spots on the
ABCA All-Region second team and All-BIG
EAST second team. Campana ranked second in
the BIG EAST with 60 stolen bases and
easily broke the Bearcats single season
steals record during the 27th game with
his 36th steal of the year. Campana held a
.329 batting average, which ranked second
on the team, with five doubles, a triple
and 18 RBI.
The 2008 Wallace Watch is made of 227
players and Campana is one of 10 BIG EAST
players on the list joining Matt Karl
(Connecticut), Chris Dominguez
(Louisville), Justin Marks (Louisville),
Zack Pitts (Louisville), David Phelps
(Notre Dame), Brian Kemp (St. John's),
Colin Lynch (St. John's), Shawn Sanford (USF),
and Tyler Kuhn (West Virginia).

A
season-opening trip to national power
Miami (Fla.) and a record 34 home games
highlight a busy 2008 schedule for the
University of Cincinnati baseball team.
With the schedule across all of college
baseball shortened by two weeks, the
Bearcats will still play a 56-game slate
with additional midweek games and
doubleheaders on the already busy docket.
Three NCAA Tournament qualifiers from the
2007 season dot UC's schedule, including
College World Series participant
Louisville. Cincinnati will host one of
the qualifiers in BIG EAST power Rutgers,
while traveling to Louisville and Miami
(Fla.). The home schedule calls for visits
from many traditional rivals, five BIG
EAST home weekends and a 17-game homestand
near the beginning of the calendar.
"With the new universal start to the
baseball season, we are pleased to be
adding even more home games to our
schedule than we have in the past," UC
head coach Brian Cleary said. "Fans will
get to enjoy visits from many of our
regional rivals, along with some of the
top teams in the BIG EAST including USF,
Rutgers and West Virginia. We've seen that
each year in the BIG EAST is a grind and
we expect no different this year. Our hope
is that we have put together a solid
schedule that will prepare us to compete
for a BIG EAST championship."
The season gets underway at Miami (Fla.),
a four-time College World Series Champion,
Feb. 22-24. In previous years, the
Bearcats would open the year with at least
three straight weeks of away games, but
that will not be the case this year. After
the trip to Coral Gables, UC will play 17
in-a-row at Marge Schott Stadium against
the likes of Chicago State, Marshall,
Cleveland State, Bowling Green, Niagara,
USF and Toledo.
Cincinnati's BIG EAST home opponents for
the 2008 season include USF (March 21-22),
Pittsburgh (April 11-13), Georgetown
(April 18-20), Rutgers (May 2-4) and West
Virginia (May 15-17). Local rivalries
against Miami (Ohio), Xavier, Kentucky and
Wright State will also be renewed on the
Marge Schott Stadium turf.
Because of the structure of the BIG EAST,
the Bearcats have missed two league
opponents each year. This year's skipped
teams will be St. John's, which qualified
for NCAA Tournament play last year, and
Villanova. An old face will return to the
UC schedule as the Bearcats will battle
Big Ten member Indiana for the first time
since 1998.
Season tickets for all the action at Marge
Schott Stadium are reasonably priced at
$20 for adults and $10 for UCATS members,
senior citizens, youth 12 and under and UC
faculty and staff and are available by
calling the UC Ticket Office at
1-877-CATS-TIX or by logging on to
CATSTIX.com.
